What’s a serving?

measuring cupsWhat’s a serving? Sometimes you’d be surprised. A ‘serving’ is different to a ‘portion’. As serving is usually a standard measure; a single serving. A portion is usually the amount you would actually use, which could be more than 1 serving.

For fruits and vegetables, a serving is ½ cup or 1 medium (palm-size); leafy greens 1 cup; 4-6 ounces juice

Cooked rice or pasta: 1/3 cup

Starchy vegetables like potato: ½ cup

Milk & other beverages: 1 cup

When reading Nutrition Facts labels, always remember to check the serving size and don’t be surprised if the serving size is not the same as your ‘portion’.
